Five Ways To Use Baking Soda for Cleaning
As a fan of cleaning and organizing, I always love finding new ways to tackle cleaning projects quickly and effectively. And when baking soda isn’t helping me with cookie and cake recipes, it’s my go-to cleaning product. Here are five of my favorite ways to use baking soda for cleaning projects:
Use as a deodorizer or to absorb moisture
We all know to leave an open box of baking soda in our refrigerators to keep food odors at bay - but you can deodorize so many other things with baking soda. Sprinkle baking soda on your carpets or upholstered furniture and wait a few minutes before vacuuming it up to absorb moisture and get rid of pesky pet odors. Place baking soda and a few drops of essential oil in a bowl and you’ve got a fragrant odor absorber that’s perfect for leaving in the bathroom - or sprinkle that mixture on top of your garbage to keep the smell of trash at bay in between trash collection days. Finally, freshen up smelly shoes by sprinkling the insides with baking soda.
Use as a gentle cleaner
Traditional cleanser is a very effective cleaning product - but it can be extremely abrasive, making it a less than ideal cleaning tool on delicate surfaces. Baking soda packs the same cleaning punch without any worries about damaging surfaces.
Use to tackle soap scum and grime
Baking soda, dish soap, and warm water - combine these three products into a paste and you’ve got an amazing cleaning product on your hands. If I’m tackling a greasy stove top, I add more dish soap to this mixture to break up the grease. If I’m tackling a scummy shower stall, I add more baking soda to the mixture to gently but effectively break down the scum. And I add more water to this mixture when I’m cleaning my sinks and countertops.
Clear clogged drains
Equal parts baking soda and white vinegar creates a chemical reaction that’ll break up even the most stubborn clogged drains. It’s a natural and effective way to clear the drain without relying on harsh (and harsh smelling) chemicals like bleach or traditional drain clearing liquids. Follow pouring the baking soda and vinegar down the drain by pouring very hot water down and your drains will be clean and clear.
Gently exfoliate skin
That’s right - baking soda isn’t just for cleaning your home. It can also be used in the shower! Wet your face with warm water and gently rub 1/2 teaspoon of baking soda for one minute for smooth, clear skin. Add baking soda to a wet, soapy washcloth and you’ve got a fantastic natural exfoliator for smooth arms and legs.
