My Favorite Products for Straight Hair

Last month, I shared my favorite products for curly hair. I definitely feel most like myself with my natural curls but every now and then it's fun to switch it up and go with straight hair. Here are the products and tricks I rely on to turn my curly hair straight - and how I keep it straight for a full week. (A quick note - I know it seems like a lot of products, and you're right! I use small amounts but my hair soaks up product like nothing else, so it's never weighed down).

Styling

To protect my hair from the heat damage of using a blow dryer and flat iron, I double up on my heat protectant. Moroccanoil Heat Styling Protection is a great spray-in heat protectant that lightly coats my strands - plus, it smells amazing. To add a bit more heat protection and to help style my hair straight during blow drying and flat ironing, I use Bumble and Bumble Straight Blow Dry. This creamy conditioner promotes shine once I've finished straightening my hair and helps lay my hair down for straightening. It's the best straightening styling product I've used and best of all, it protects against heat up to 455 degrees - so you can heat style knowing your hair is completely protected.

Finishing

After I've finished ironing my hair, I'll top it off with something that's lightly moisturizing to bring some good moisture back to my hair after heat styling. I use a few different products depending on how my hair is doing. If I need to flatten my hair a bit more, I'll use Mixed Chicks Gloss and Shining Hair Silk, which is super moisturizing but a bit heavy, so it brings my hair down if needed. If I need all-around light moisture - or as a touch-up throughout the week - I use Moroccanoil Glimmer Shine. It's a fantastic dry oil that brings so much moisture and shine to my hair without weighing it down. For a touch-up in the week or to tame frizz, I use Moroccanoil Frizz Control. It's protected my straight hair through rain and humidity, so I live for this spray!

Dry Shampoo

I don't rely too heavily on dry shampoo but every now and then I need to use something to extend the life of my blow out. I use the smallest amount of either Bumble and Bumble Pret-a-Powder at the roots or Living Proof Perfect Hair Day (PhD) Dry Shampoo through the lengths of my hair. Both are great at refreshing my scalp and hair and giving my straight hair a little texture.

Treatment

When it's time to wash my hair, I'll use a clarifying shampoo to remove all product buildup and then begin the process of bringing my curls back after a week of being straight. I'll use Moroccanoil Treatment Original as an oil leave-in conditioner in damp hair and let it air dry. This restores moisture to my hair and scalp while leaving my hair so silky and restoring my curl pattern.

How To Extend the Life of a Blow Out

My family is West Indian, and we live for wrapping our hair to extend hair styles. For those who aren't familiar, hair wrapping is a technique for laying your hair flat against your head to preserve and extend the life of a blow out. I divide my hair down the middle into two sections and begin brushing the right side of my hair over to the left side and wrapping the hair all the way around, securing along the way with long bobby pins. I'll use a silk hair bonnet to keep my hair in place overnight. With hair wrapping, my hair will stay straight for as long as I want it to and looking like it's been freshly styled the whole time.
