How To Get Your Feet Sandal-Ready

My pedicure essentials

Summer is finally here! It's time to break out your summertime essentials, which for me includes sandals and flip flops.

But first, you've got to make sure your feet are ready for wearing open shoes. Here are my favorite tools and tips for getting your feet sandal-ready - and how to fix your feet when too much exposure leaves them in need of some TLC.

Start With Freshly Trimmed Toenails

It all starts with clean feet - I trim my toenails after I've removed last week's pedicure and hopped out of the shower. I love this toenail clipper that I picked up from Sephora as part of their standard manicure/pedicure set. You can get a complete set of tools here.

Tip: Trim your toenails straight across to prevent hangnails or ingrown toenail growth.

Exfoliate and Buff Your Heels

At least once a week, I use my Amope Pedi Perfect foot file on my heels. I resisted buying this product for so long, believing it had to be a gimmick. But after snagging it on sale at Walgreens, I've become such a believer. It really does gently and effectively remove dead skin and fix cracked heels after just a few minutes on each foot. I'm so glad I took the leap on this one.

I'll touch up my heels as need be with these Tweezerman products. My foot file (left; similar here) really keeps my feet smooth. I even use it to quickly finish off my feet after using my Amope. And my callus shaver (right) is a great product to use in between Amope uses.

Tip: Always use a foot file to ensure your heels are smooth after removing dead, dry skin.

Moisturize Your Feet - And Seal It In

The final step in taking care of your feet is to keep them moisturized. Of all the products I've tried, nothing does as great a job of moisturizing feet and keeping them looking perfect like the True Blue Spa Cracked Heel Treatment. The glycolic acid gently exfoliates your skin and promotes cell turnover, which paired with soothing Shea butter, creates the softest feet ever.

Tip: If your heels are especially rough, try adding a little oil (I add a few drops of Josie Maran 100% Pure Argan Oil, which I keep on my vanity along with the rest of my pedicure tools) into the cracked heel treatment for extra moisture. Seal everything in by wearing a pair of cotton socks.

Final Tips
  • I personally love the look of nail polish on my toes - even a clear coat can make all the difference. But if nail polish isn't your thing, keeping your toenails neatly trimmed is all that you need.
  • Wear slippers or socks around the house. As much as I love being barefoot, walking around barefoot (particularly on carpeting) can cause your heels to crack or snag.
Here's to showing off your sandal-ready feet all summer long!
