Closet Re-do! Change Your Storage to Maximize Space

I love clothing, and carefully storing your clothing is the best way to take care of your clothes to make sure they last as long as they can.

This was my closet on Thursday night. I loved using wooden hangers, but as you can see, my closet was simply bursting at the seams. Clothing fell off the hangers regularly because the closet was so jam-packed.

Closet organization is tough - especially in New York City, where your closets are super tiny. I had already added additional space by adding a hanging closet rod but I knew that my hangers were getting in the way.

I caught an amazing sale at Macy's for Huggable Hangers and immediately ordered up a few boxes. I'd heard so many positive things about them over the years and with my closet in complete chaos, it was time to give them a shot.

And the results speak for themselves! I switched out my wooden hangers for my new Huggable Hangers and gained so much space. I was even able to add a few additional items that I'd kept folded in baskets on the floor of my closet because I now had so much extra space. I promise, I'm not at all sponsored - but the change is so amazing that I'm a complete believer. I even have plenty of room to fill up the extra hangers I have left over without taking away from the space I've created.

Now I feel like I've got the closet I've always wanted. Here are some of my other tips for keeping it organized - I hope these tips help you keep your closets in tip-top shape:

  • I've purchased cedar blocks and sachets (you can see them hanging up in the closet) to keep my clothes protected from mites that eat away at fabric. To refresh them, I use cedar spray every other month to make sure they keep my clothes protected.
  • I've installed hooks on the inside and outside of my closet doors to provide me with additional hanging space for accessories or for laying out my outfits.
  • At the end of each season, I go through my closet to see which clothes need repairs and which clothes should be donated or thrown away. Holding on to things that you don't wear, don't fit, or are in tatters eats up your precious closet space.
  • I keep two baskets at the floor of my closet to store scarves and accessories and items that don't need to be hung up, like sweats and hoodies. Consider dividing up your clothes between the things that need to be hung versus the things that need to be folded.
  • I've made a rule for myself: In order for something to go in the closet, something has to leave it. So in order for me to pick up a new pair of shoes or a new top, I have to be willing to get rid of a pair of shoes or a top in turn. It's stopped me from overstuffing my closet and has saved me money.
